Bill S-1002: An Act Respecting Girl Guides of Canada - Second Reading

Honourable Senators, I rise today to speak as the official opposition critic of Bill S-1002, An Act Respecting Girl Guides of Canada. The Girl Guides of Canada’s governance is formalized through a special act of Parliament titled An Act Respecting the Canadian Council of the Girl Guides Association (1917). This act has been amended twice, once in 1947 and once in1961. Bill S-1002 seeks to make administrative edits to the Girl Guides of Canada’s procedural provisions; incorporate certain provisi…

Bill C-59: An Act respecting national security matters - Second Reading

Honourable senators, I rise today to speak on Bill C-59, which proposes sweeping changes to our national security legislation. This is a broad piece of legislation which incorporates many elements. I acknowledge some of the elements proposed in this legislation may be desirable, for instance, provisions in the bill that strengthen the authorities of the Communications Security Establishment to protect Canada against cyberattacks seems to be a positive measure. However, I fear that such positive…

Al-Quds Day Demonstration

Honourable Senators, I rise to draw your attention to a serious event that occurred in my city of Toronto this past weekend.  The annual anti-Semitic hate-fest known as al-Quds Day was held at Queen’s Park followed by a march which shut down University Avenue. Since 1979, Quds Day has been a regular international event sponsored by the Islamic Republic of Iran.  In Toronto, it attracts local terrorist and regime sympathizers who call for the eradication of Israel and the mass murder of Jews. …

Statement on Iranian Call for Genocide

Honourable Senators, On June 3rd, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei posted a tweet calling for the genocide of the Jewish People.  The tweet read: “Our stance against Israel is the same stance we have always taken.  Israel is a malignant cancerous tumor in the West Asian region that has to be removed and eradicated, it is possible and it will happen.” This reprehensible call demonstrates yet again the depravity of the Iranian Regime. Honourable Senators, these were not hollow wor…

Iran Accountability Week 2018

Honorable Senators, This week has been designated Iran Accountability Week by the Liberal Government. I’m glad that when it comes to the Islamic Republic of Iran – the most malign regime in the world – the Liberals are asking for accountability. I share this hunger for accountability from both the Iranian Regime and from our own government which continues to pursue a re-engagement plan with the world’s most abhorrent regime. A regime which only yesterday was exposed as lying extravagantly whe…

Bill C-50: An Act to Amend the Canada Elections Act - Second Reading

Honorable Senators: I rise today to speak as critic of Bill C-50 an Act to Amend the Canada Election Act (Political Financing). After two and a half years in government, Bill C-50 is the Liberal government’s one and only piece of legislation passed by the other place and sent to the Senate to address the supremely important issue of election reform in our digital age. Whether it be deliberate misinformation campaigns sponsored by hostile foreign governments, or an uneven playing field betwee…

Bnai Brith Audit 2017

Honourable Senators, Yesterday, B’nai Brith Canada released its 36th Annual Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents. The audit found that 2017 set records for antisemitism in Canada. Unfortunately, this was the second consecutive year in which record numbers were reached. There is cause to be deeply concerned. Incidents of anti-Semitic vandalism increased by more than double, reaching levels not seen since 2013.  Additionally, we are seeing an increase in politicians seeking political support from tho…

Professor Kavous Seyed-Emami

Honourable senators, I rise today to stand in solidarity with the tens of thousands of brave Iranian protesters who took to the streets in January to demand an end to their corrupt and depraved government. I stand to remember the victims of those protests, the over two dozen innocents who were murdered for denouncing a hated regime that has spent billions of dollars on war and terror abroad while allowing its own citizens to suffer at home. This past weekend we learned of yet another victim of…

The Late Honey and Barry Sherman

Honourable senators, I rise today to mourn the loss of two great Canadians, Honey and Barry Sherman. On December 15, 2017, these two pillars of the Toronto community were viciously murdered in their home. As a result, Canada lost two of its greatest and most generous philanthropists, and in Barry Sherman, Canada lost one of its most accomplished business innovators and job creators. Only two few weeks before her murder, Honey Sherman was standing right here in this chamber accepting a Senate 1…
